Montserrat
Montserrat is a delightful island with an active volcano. Tourism was banned for a time due to a volcanic eruption in the mid-1990s. Access is mainly from Antigua. The islanders are very friendly and they lead a life which is typically West Indian in character. Wonderful beaches can be found on the north side of the island, and there one can witness many forms of natural life. There are a few inexpensive hotels and guest-houses, some nice restaurants and beach-bars.
The volcanic explosion caused considerable problems for the island. It destroyed a large part of the island, especially the capital, Plymouth. Access is still partially denied to the south of the island because of residual volcanic activity. Although Montserrat does not attract much tourism, it is still a very lovely place to visit. The islanders are very welcoming in spite of the sufferings they endured during the explosion. This is an ideal place to visit for a day from Antigua.
