Antigua

Antigua and Barbuda are twin islands. Antigua is a popular tourist destination, especially for cruise ships. It has many lovely beaches, hidden coves, beach-bars, and a number of excellent hotels, covering a wide variety of budgets. It has casinos, which are a rarity on other Caribbean islands, good facilities for sailing, and many places of historical interest. Antigua, once upon a time, was heavily defended by forts to keep the unwelcome away. Most of these forts have been converted to hotels now. Since World War II, the island has maintained an American airbase.

Barbuda, on the other hand, is a quiet, tranquil island, but has many spectacular beaches, an interesting natural life, and is truly Caribbean in character.

Accommodations in Antigua

The chief feature of most hotels on the island is that they are “all-inclusives”. The advantage being that they are economical but the disadvantage can be a lack of variety. Antigua, of course, has many stylish villas and resorts, but it also has less expensive accommodations by way of apartments, condos and cottages, to suit the budget-minded traveler. Dickenson Bay is the most happening place in Antigua, where most tourists stay. Barbuda has very few hotels and its main attraction is the frigate-bird colony, the largest in the world.
